Scenario 3

Scenario 2 with housing upgrade

PV + WT + Pumped hydro storage + Housing upgrade

As a result of our recommended housing upgrade techniques, the current demand at the Isle of Cumbrae is decreased by 25 %. Hence, this scenario we used the reduced demand to build our model.

The 25% decline in the current demand resulted in the daily load to decrease to 19.5MWh from 25MWh. Thus, we build the scenario 2 again with this reduced demand and calculated the savings of hybrid components used in the scenario 2. So, basically, the scenario 3 is same scenario 2, but, with reduced demand.

We have used 'HOMER Pro' software to design this combination. The circuit diagram that we developed to calculate saving in hybrid components compared with the scenario 2 is given in figure 1.

Results

The changes from the scenario 2 to build this model is highlighted in figure 3. Thus, by using three wind turbine we are able to achieve around 98 % of the renewable fraction.  Therefore, a potential savings of one wind turbine is achieved as a result of the housing upgrade technique. Thus, saving in money spent for the installation of renewables at the Isle of Cumbrae.
